Favourite Campsites
Alamo Campground, Organ Pipe National Park, Arizona
An idyllic primitive campground at the mouth of the Alamo Canyon. Just four sites and designated for tents only. Fortunately, the National Park Service viewed our little camper as a tent!
Belle Campground, Joshua Tree National Park, California
Dwarfed by the dramatic rocks.
Jumbo Rocks Campground, Joshua Tree National Park, California
Tucked in amongst yet more huge rocks!
Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, California
A wonderful place, especially in the fading evening light, in spite of being stuck in the sand. A true challenge that ended in laughter and triumph.
Trona Pinnacles, California Desert National Conservation Area, California
Camped in a natural shallow bowl, surrounded by the Pinnacles, amid the varied and muted colours of Searles Valley.
Kelso Sand Dunes Camp, Mojave National Preserve, California
Tucked in amongst a stand of Tamarisks on the edge of the Kelso Dunes, the rugged Providence Mountains off in the distance. A perfect place in the late afternoon light.
Lizard Creek Campground, Grand Tetons National Park, Wyoming
A stunning campsite on the edge of Jackson Lake in one of our favourite national parks.
Squaw Flat Campground, Canyonlands National Park, Utah
Another of our favourite national parks and campgrounds. I was here on my own whilst Sterling went to a conference in San Franciso.
Pinyon Campground, Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado
A wonderful campground in sight of the dunes with hummingbirds and hummingbird moths adding additional entertainment to our stay.
Creek Pasture Campground, Bureau of Land Management, Utah
A delightful find not far off the Needles Highway. Quiet, beautiful and free.
BLM land, just outside Capitol Reef National Park, Utah
Another BLM freebie with fantastic views.
Unexpected Delights
Home Made Sand Ladders, Imperial Sand Dunes, California
What wonderful things! Designed and built by Sterling using our leveling blocks, wire ties and the rigid bars from an old luggage rack. We would never have got out without them.
Off Road Ice Cream Van, Imperial Sand Dunes, California
Who'd have thunk it - an ice cream van in the middle of the desert!
Trona Pinnacles, California Desert National Conservation Area, California
It's a five mile trek down a dirt road to access this gem but worth every foot of washboarding.
Cliff Dwellings, Walnut Canyon National Monument, Arizona
We saw a road sign for Walnut Canyon whilst driving on the interstate and veered off to make the short detour. We weren't disappointed. The canyon itself is impressive enough but the real attractions are the cliff dwellings created by the Sinagua people over eight hundred years ago.
Red Rock County Park, Gallup, New Mexico
Last time we visited this park in 2003 we only stayed one night, the views obscured by wind blown sand. This time we discovered the wonderful world of sandstone canyons, sculpted rock formations, beautifully carved intermittent water channels, ledges and slickrock.
Sauntering Bison, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
Early in the mornings, the bison are often just sauntering down the empty roads ahead of the arrival of the masses. This one was totally unperturbed as we matched his pace in the truck and took this video.
Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
Startling colours and lines combine to make this one of the most stunning of Yellowstone's many amazing features.
The Ute Trail, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
The breathtaking views from this trail, high in the Alpine ecosystem, were the highlight of our trip to the park.
Medano Creek, Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado
An utter delight: Walking in ankle deep warm water, small eddies cutting across the sandy bed, surrounded by dunes and mountains.
Giant Puffball Mushroom, Highway Springs Campground, Colorado
We were gifted half of a Giant Puffball mushroom by the hosts at this campground. All three recipes tried were an outstanding success. Definitely 'Gift of the Year'.
Mono Lake, Mono Basin National Forest Scenic Area, California
Tufa Towers in the stunning Mono Lake. We spent a long time just looking!
Lichfield Cathedral, Lichfield, UK
A marvel of medieval architecture.
Christmas Lights, California Living Museum, California
A Christmas light festival including a ride on the santa train. What's not to like?
